SUPs have Boating Rules Too!

Writer: Brenda HambletonBrenda Hambleton

Stand-up paddleboards, or SUPs, are popular on Keoka. Did you know that they are also subject to Maine boating regulations? Paddleboards must have:

  • A life jacket for each person on board

  • A sound-producing device such as a whistle

  • Navigation lights when used between sunset and sunrise – this may be a flashlight or a headlamp with a white light

  • Visual distress signals when used on federally controlled waters

Paddleboard users must comply with recreational boating laws and rules. For a full description of Maine's boating regulations click here.

I've got to go out and get a whistle!
