KLA Loon Nest Refurbishment

By Andy Tabor

Photo 1.  Towed the loon nest platform over to Stone’s Cove Beach.  Removed all the old tie down cords that hold the nest onto the platform, and then used a coal shovel to pry the nest free of the platform.  It was VERY well adhered after over 20 years.  Gradually slid the nest off the platform and onto the top of a plastic folding table.

Photo 2.  Towed the platform back over to our cottage and hoisted it onto the end of the dock.  The trip back did a good job of cleaning off most of the debris.

Photo 3.  Gathered tools and repair materials, including the bottom plywood.

Photo 4.  Removed the warning sign, and the foam flotation on the side where the plywood bottom had been ripped off by the rocks.

Photos 5 & 6.  Drilled holes for the new anchor eyes and installed them.

Photo 7.  Removed all the damaged hardware.

Photo 8.  Reinstalled the foam flotation and the recovered piece of the plywood bottom. Installed 3 pieces of decking to reinforce the bottom of the platform, and 3 spindles as skids to make it easier to drag the platform up onto the beach for the winter.

Photo 9.  Back to Stone’s Cove Beach and Jim Schellenger assisted with sliding the nest back onto the platform.  Installed new nylon cords to secure the nest from sliding around.  All ready for next Spring!
