Recap of the 2024 Races

By Al Struck
The 11th Bud Lazott Regatta will be remembered for the lack of wind and the seamanship exhibited by those who caught the slightest zephyr. The usual one hour race extended to two plus hours. To everyone's credit, all boats made it across the finish line without assistance.
The finish was the most exciting part of the race, as the favorite in the Laser Class, Glenn Haberbush, was nosed out by first-time entrant, Ronan Haberbush, Glenn's son. As Glenn was getting ready to pinch off another boat at the line, Ronan glided by Glenn's port side. Glenn said that the look of shock on his face was only surpassed by the size of the grin on Ronan's face.
In the Open Class Marc Dekanter sailed unopposed for a second first place in that class.
In the 5th iteration of the KLA Camp Cup all four of the Waterford camps took part: Birch Rock, Fernwood Cove, Waziyahta, and Wigwam put multiple boats in three different classes. In the Sunfish Class, Leland Naylor from Birch Rock took first and Amelia Benhona from Fernwood Cove took second. In the Catamaran Class, Taylor Fodi and Clark Duiven teamed up to take the first place from Wigwam. The tightest race was in the Laser Class, with Jack Manson from Birch Rock taking first and Ezra Trapis from Wigwam second.
The overall winner of the KLA Camp Cup was Jack Manson from Birch Rock, which means they retain the cup for another year.
There are many volunteers to thank — I have contacted them all and they all had a great time. We want especially to thank Chris Searles, owner of Keoka Beach Campground, for hosting the Regatta again this year. See you all next year!!
