Fall Foliage 5K
It was a perfect day for the 20th annual Waterford Fall Foliage 5K. Records were set for the number of runners, walkers, and chili makers. KLA merchandise and stand-up paddleboard tickets were scooped up by the crowd helping us to raise over $1,000 at the event.
KLA members will see the paddleboard out on Keoka Lake as Erin Grizone, owner of Good Health is a Habit, was the winner of the raffle and went home with the board.
For more information on the race and the event winners, check the Fall Foliage 5K website.
New Loon Buoys
Andy Tabor reported that he picked up the new Loon Nest Buoys from Sealite in Tilton, NH. The buoys were funded by KLA in order to make it easier for boaters to see, and stay away from the loon nesting area
The people who made them came out and posed with them for pictures and then they came in to the office where I was and wanted to hear all about our loons and how the loon recovery programs were going in Maine. They’ve made a lot of these buoys for lakes in NH, but I guess we’re their first in Maine. This is a special local project for them; they usually make huge ocean navigation buoys and standard inland waters buoys and have locations worldwide.
The buoys will stay in the shrink wrap for the winter. Andy will install them along with the loon nest in the spring.
New Boat Ramp!
The boat launch was replaced on Sept 13-14. From Charlie Tarbell, President of KLA:
The ramp itself is in and finished. Some grading, asphalt, and rip-rap still needs to be completed at the top of the ramp when our paving contractor is available in about three weeks. That said, the ramp is usable for put-in and take-out, and the head of the ramp is graded to shed runoff from the road to a plunge-pool on the south side of the ramp, instead of it eroding the beach.
Kudos to Arne, Al, Jim, Chris Brennan, John Bell, and especially Jeff Ward for all their hard work in making the project happen. Friday's work in the water was confounding and cold. Saturday's work was out of the water and went much faster. Thanks also to the Town of Waterford and to a donor from KBCG who wishes to remain anonymous. This was a true team effort and the end result is really satisfying -- even if not yet paved.
